From their colorful scales to their ability to breathe underwater, there is so much about fish that kids can learn and appreciate.🐟🐠 A lot of my homeschool science lessons are topics one of my children suggested, and this was no different. My daughter recently became interested in ocean life, so naturally, she wanted to study fish.
About my lesson plans:
I create my unit study lesson plans based on my kids’ interests and incorporate most of these elements into each one: videos (usually from YouTube), books, websites, printable sheets (facts, activities, worksheets, etc.), a themed snack, a themed craft or hands-on, and a field trip. (with our homeschool group or as a family). Depending on how in-depth we get, I space out the activities between 3-4 days, over about a week or two. It’s not something we rush or have a time limit on completing.

Fish videos for kids
Although we usually watch between 3 and 6 videos over the course of our unit study, we always begin with a video or two. I found that videos helped get them interested in the lesson ahead and answered some questions they may have as they learn about fish.
This video, All About Fish For Kids, is from one of our favorite YouTubers for homeschool lessons.

Fish books for kids
We didn’t have any books on fish at home, so we borrowed a bunch from the library. I used this as a chance to look at books to buy for our home library, and I ended up buying copies of these two books on Amazon.

We found this cool tropical fish live cam from the Aquarium of the Pacific. There are a few others on the page, so scroll down to check them out.
Fish Theme Snack For Kids
I checked Pinterest for a quick snack, and we made this, except we used peanut butter on some of them.
Fish Craft For Kids
My kids made this cute fish we found on Pinterest. I admit, I’m not very crafty, but my kids enjoy it. I look for simple crafts that satisfy the hands-on experience they’re looking for, but keep it easy to manage.
Field Trip
We didn’t do a field trip for this lesson, although we did take my daughter to The Florida Aquarium about a year ago.
