Wow!! I can’t believe today is a milestone year for me and my husband Billy. 20 years ago today, we got married.
When we got married, we had already known each other for six years and had gotten engaged the year before. We didn’t rush into getting married and really took a lot of time to get to know each other. We were pretty wild back then and we weren’t ready to get married right away.
Like any other couple, we’ve had some low moments and some amazing moments. Through it all, I think that kept us together was our love and the fact that we wanted to be together more than we wanted to be apart.
If I can give any advice to couples just starting out, it would be this – don’t show them love and attention the way you want to be shown love and attention. They need it shown to them the way that speaks to their heart. This was something Billy & I struggled with in the early years (and sometimes still do!). My husband is very affectionate and loves hugs and physical affection so when he’s upset or down about something that’s what he needs. When I’m upset, I want to talk it out and dissect it. We got into quite a bit of conflict when we first got married because when Billy needed me for support, I would sit down and want to talk to him about it – thinking I was helping him! And he would want to hug me and physically console me when I needed support. Of course that didn’t work out well and we would feel like the other one wasn’t there for us, when in fact we were, but we were there for the other in the way that we wanted the other to be there for us, not the way that we needed.
Here are some photos from our wedding day, 20 years ago today!
Instead of a limo, we rented a 1957 pink Cadillac for the day.
