Valentine’s Day is named after Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome. He was a Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century. In 496 AD Pope Gelasius marked February 14th as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom. Over time, his feast day became associated with love and kindness. Learn more about him here.
