My kids, ages 8 and 10, recently started playing online games. They usually play games on their iPads using apps or on their Nintendo Switch, but playing online (via our laptop) is something new to them.
For safety reasons, I seek out games without a chat feature. That is super important to me, as it is to many parents.
But gaming has many benefits, and if you do a little research first, you’ll find many sites that are safe for kids.
Cognitive Development
Believe it or not, gaming can actually give your child’s brain a workout! Many games are designed to challenge players by requiring critical thinking, problem-solving, and quick decision-making. Whether they’re navigating mazes, solving puzzles, or strategizing in real-time, kids are honing their cognitive skills without even realizing it!
Encouraging Creativity
These days, games aren’t just about shooting or racing; many offer creative outlets. From designing virtual worlds in sandbox games to crafting unique storylines in adventure games, the possibilities are endless. Giving your child the space to experiment creatively can boost their imagination and innovation skills.
Learning New Skills
Online games often include elements of science, math, and reading. Many educational games engage kids in a fun way, helping them build skills in subjects they might struggle with in school. Game play can serve as a fantastic supplement to their homeschool learning. Plus, they’ll be having so much fun, they might not even notice they’re learning something new!
Stress Relief and Fun
Let’s face it—everyone needs a little downtime now and then. Online gaming can be a fantastic way for kids to unwind. Engaging in fun, immersive games allows them to escape for a while and relieve stress. It’s an excellent balance to their busy lives.
In searching for gaming sites, I came across the food/cooking games at culinaryschools.org/kids-games/. My kids, especially my ten-year-old, have been having a blast trying all the different games they offer.
Here are two of their favorites so far:
Coffee Shop – Coffee shop is a simple business simulator where you run Café Calypso. Earn as much as possible by adjusting prices and listening to your customer suggestions. This game simplifies the process of what goes on in a food service business in a way that younger players can understand. You’ll make business decisions that will affect your bottom line. Among the lessons to be learned are the principles of pricing based on supply and demand and budgeting.
Nickelodeon Cooking Contest—This is a food preparation compilation game consisting of 10 different mini-games. It invites you to make Holland Oats, a Krabby Patty, Sushi Dushi, a Kelp Shake, donuts, avocado toast, sponge cake, Love Muffins, Hudson’s Juice Blend, and steak and potatoes. Your kids will learn how to slice food, mix ingredients, and adjust time to prepare and cook meals.
