As far as easy STEM projects go, this experiment is at the top of our list.
We’ve done this several times when we homeschooled our older three kids, but this was the first time for the younger two.
All you need is a 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke and a pack of Mentos. You can try other sodas but I’ve heard Diet Coke works best.
Stem activities for kids
Open the soda and place it away from anything you don’t want soaked on soda. We did ours on our front lawn.
Loosen up the Mentos a little by moving them inside the package before you open them. Open the pack of mentos from one end. Use your finger or a card to hold the candy in place as you turn it upside down over the soda. Remove, let the Mentos slide in the bottle and run.
You can buy a tube that holds the Mentos. It’s supposed to make it easier for them to slide in. I’ll link to one on Amazon using my affiliate link. We’ve never used one before so I can’t say how well it works but Amazon sells these.
