Today our local library held a Butterfly Festival. My husband & I took the little ones, plus we met up with friends which made the day even more fun. The staff and volunteers planned and hosted a fun event for our community, and we had such a great time.
My family has a special connection to butterflies. My mother loved them and after she crossed over, we thought of her every time we saw one. We like to think she’s sending them to us as her way of saying hello. Even my grandkids, who never met their great-grandmother talk about her as a butterfly.
The festival started with two crafts; first a paper caterpillar. The staff had all the parts cut out and on a table with some glue sticks. Both kids made one.
These are their finished caterpillars. Miss Caterpillar is sad that she lost an antenna.
The second craft was a butterfly magnet made from coffee filters, clothespins and coffee filters. The kids colored the filters with markers and then the volunteers assembled them.
We love them so much and hung them on the fridge as soon as we got home.
Next, they created mini-milkweed gardens with the ladies from the Pioneer Graden Club. This was such a fun project and one that I may do with the kids on my own. Loralye especially enjoyed doing this and of course, Landon loved it because he got to play with dirt. lol
They also gave us bookmarks with butterfly facts on them.
After that, they had storytime in another room. It was set up so that you go from room to room, which was great because it kept us moving. Storytime is always fun at the library!
Then we all went outside for the grand finale – the butterfly release!
Thank you to the Marion County Library (Headquarters-Ocala) staff and volunteers for putting on a fun event! If you’re in Marion County or the surrounding area, follow them on Twitter.
